HR often injects gamification into the office hoping to make work “fun.” But for many, points and badges just feel like extra hoops to jump through. Most people don’t want more “play”—they just want to get their work done.
The truth is, fun doesn’t equal rewarding. To make work truly rewarding, we must look at what people actually crave: a sense of progress, meaningful feedback, and appreciation from another human being (not an AI or a machine).
The “Magic WOW” Experiment
In 2019, we worked with the Malaysian Global Innovation and Creative Center (MaGIC) to achieve this. We built a simple app called “Magic WOW.” It had no points, no leaderboards, and no physical prizes. All it did was allow “MaGICians” to post a win, tag a colleague, and give a “Like.”
The results? Over 50% participation for two years straight, with 50+ posts every single day.
Why did it work?
- It fits their culture: It jived with a young, energetic team that valued collaboration.
- It was cooperative, not competitive: Without leaderboards, the focus remained on encouragement rather than outranking others.
- It was genuine: Because there were no rewards, people posted from the heart. Adding prizes likely would have dampened the authenticity.
The next time you consider gamification, ask yourself: are you just trying to make work “fun,” or are you making it rewarding?
